The DivaCup may be one of those “crunchy mama” products that makes some people cringe, but to me it’s been a HUGE relief! I’ve been using the Diva Cup for about three years now and I absolutely love it. It has given me a totally different perspective, not only on my monthly visit from Aunt Flo, but on how I’m taking care of my lady business as well. After getting married, I knew that babies would soon be on their way, and I quickly obsessed over taking care of my nether regions because I knew it would be a sweet growing baby’s home for about 40 weeks. I wouldn’t want my baby developing in a chemical infested balloon!
Being a college athlete at the time, I knew that cloth pads wouldn’t be the best option to use if I was traveling for games. That’s when a friend suggested the DivaCup. Just like any product, however, there are pros and cons. Read this post for my honest thoughts.
The Good:
- No more buying tampons or pads!
- It’s reusable and eco-friendly.
- Absolutely no chemicals whatsoever (it is made completely from silicone).
- You can SLEEP with it.
- The company helps to encourage donations to support and help women in third world countries with feminine hygiene products.
- It can be worn for 12 hours before you need to empty and wash it.
- They have two different sizes.
- I personally experience less severe cramping, shorter periods, and lighter flow.
- It can be found at every mom’s favorite place: TARGET! (I was very excited about this because when I first purchased it the only places I could find it were Sprouts and Amazon).
- It can be just as easy as inserting a tampon after practicing a few times.
The Bad:
- It takes trial and error. Meaning, it will take some time for you to really have it inserted properly.
- It can leak if not inserted properly…like I said, trial and error.
- You may have to use a lubricant to help insert it. I find this happens close to my last couple of days of my cycle. Yay for coconut oil!
- It eventually will stain (but the company sells a wash you can buy).
- It can be a little bit tricky to remove sometimes.
- If you have a baby, you will probably need to upgrade to Model 2.
- They can appear a little pricey, but considering it is reusable, it’s worth it.
The Ugly:
- This is a reusable product. You have to empty the cup and wash it out (including washing your hands) thoroughly before inserting it again. You’ll get used to it though!
- It can be a little messy if you aren’t slow with removal… remember the trial and error mentioned above?
- Sometimes when you need to empty and you’re in public and there isn’t a way to wash it because there are multiple stalls and one sink. Talk about awkward. I typically try to empty it before leaving the house for a long period of time, just to be safe.
- Not everyone will be supportive of it because too many people simply think it’s “gross.”
The DivaCup has saved me so much time and money! As a mom, this product really helps because I know it won’t leak and I don’t have to worry about changing it as often as a tampon. The best part? I know I’m helping to provide a healthier “home” for my babies while they are in utero!
