How Hiking Saved Me + the Best Trails in Phoenix

whbfboxklaThere is crispness in the air as I step out of my car on a sunny fall day in Arizona. I lace up my dirty hiking boots, throw on my CamelBak, and put my ear buds in. I tuck my phone away, only to be used for music, and take a nice big deep breath in. I push aside my busy thoughts that race through my mind: my to-do list, what I am making for dinner, and the endless questions and thoughts about my kids. I don’t think about my worries, my concerns, or even if I shut my garage before leaving the house (too late now right?) as I walk towards the dirt trail. There, I am greeted with the beauty of desert plants, a nice breeze, and a beautiful mountain ready to be conquered. For the next 90 minutes, I focus on me. I focus on my every step, every word to every song, and every breath as I hike up the mountain. I think about my personal goals, my family goals, and places I want to visit someday. I really try to focus on things that make me a better person, a better wife, and a better mom. Upon hitting the top, I find myself feeling confident, strong, and alive. This, ladies, this is where hiking saved me and my sanity was found.

The day-to-day grind can certainly wear on us as mothers. The late nights, early mornings, tending to the needs of our children, changing diapers, all while keeping the house in order. We are constantly serving others, which I know we are wired to do, but we need to save our own sanity too every once in a while.  We need to do this so that we can continue to be the best wives and mothers we can be. Finding a place of peace is key, and taking the time to do this weekly is imperative. Go early, before your significant other goes to work, or on the weekend, when someone can help watch the kids.

Enjoy the exercise, soak in the vitamin D, and take advantage of the beautiful trails that surround our city!

Below are some of my favorite hiking trails that I love in the valley.

Thunderbird Mountain

Located in North Phoenix, this is a great family-friendly hike for all ages and all fitness levels! Thee are over 15 miles of trails to choose from, and all are well labeled. The Arrowhead Point is my favorite!

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

Pinnacle Peak

This trail is located in North Scottsdale, and it is 1.75 miles one way. It has some great elevation changes, but the trail is very well maintained and easy to hike. Some of the elevation increases can be challenging and get your heart beating faster for that workout!

Difficulty: Moderate

Toms Thumb  (McDowell Mountains)

This hike, located in the McDowell Mountains, is worth the drive. 5.7 miles in and back- most of the trail is maintained however there are more steep and loose sections as you get closer to the top. The views and the breeze are worth it!

Difficulty: Moderate/Hard
