Happy Hostess :: How to Throw a Retro Football Party

1
Remember those days when you could watch a football game in its entirety? Nobody was constantly declaring “I’m hungry!” as if you were the keeper of all the food in the house and there wasn’t a perpetual pile of laundry on the sofa silently shaming you. In the spirit of remembering the days when you could actually watch and enjoy all four quarters, we’ve got some retro football party ideas that any football loving mom can appreciate.

Our retro football party ideas include two must-haves to bring back the “good ol’ days:” appetizers and cocktails. Ritz Crackers are a universally adored snack and have a retro vibe. Plus, both kids & adults love their buttery goodness! Elevate your snack game by topping your Ritz with a slice of creamy brie, a plump blackberry and honey drizzle. Yum!

A gorgeous cocktail is the second item on our retro football party ideas list and it’s sure to make your party a modern hit. The “Blackberry Blitz” is a football– themed version of an old time whiskey “smash” (talk about retro- smashes date back to the 1800’s).

Blackberry Blitz Cocktail Recipe:
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced
  • 4 plump fresh blackberries
  • Mint sprig
  • 2 oz whisky (we used Macallan 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky because we like the good stuff)
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • Garnish: mint, lemon, blackberry on a skewer
 Directions:
  • Muddle lemon slices, blackberries and mint in a cocktail shaker.
  • Add whisky and simple syrup and fill shaker with ice.
  • Shake at least 10 times and strain into a glass filled with ice.
Rounding out our retro football party ideas list is a beautiful bar cart complete with a retro football helmet, some gorgeous floral arrangements, a Heisman Trophy appetizer plate, glasses with eye blacks for drink labels and whistle draped booze (because we enjoy cocktails while cheering on our favorite teams and that’s OK!).

Hopefully our retro football party ideas are so pretty that they have the same effect as those clear plastic furniture covers your great aunt had in her house when you were a kid: best to steer clear and let the adults do adult things…like watch a football game from start to finish!
