Loving the Skin You’re In {Part 1}

3

Lovingtheskinyourein.2Starting this month we’ll begin a series titled “Loving the Skin You’re In.” We will be talking all things related to self-care; emotionally, physically, and mentally. As moms, there is very little “me time” in our lives, but believe it or not, it’s a must! You cannot care for others if you are not cared for. You know how the flight attendants tell you, as the parent, to put your oxygen mask on first in an emergency and then help your children get their masks on. Well, that’s because if you pass out from lack of oxygen, then what help are you to those around you?

But how? In this crazy, busy season of life, how do you take care of yourself when it seems like someone else is always needing you to care for them? Well, this series is geared to help you start thinking through some of those things. How do you care for your heart that is constantly being tried by infants that have a continual need and desire for you, or toddlers that demand help during their day, or preschoolers who ask a million questions, or older kids needing money, help, and rides everywhere, or teenagers tugging on your heartstrings each day? Our kids are kids, their desires, needs, tantrums, rages, emotions, and everything else that can be so draining on us is normal. It is us that need to figure out how to care for ourselves, in the midst of the chaos, so that we don’t explode every time our buttons are pushed.

Today, let’s breathe. That’s simple, right?! Stop, right now, and check your breathe. Are you breathing full, deep breathes? Or are yours short and shallow? As moms, we are always on the verge of being beckoned and often our breathing is short and hurried. Today, try to pause and take a few deep breaths every time you think about it. Not only does this help our bodies get a little extra oxygen, but it also requires us to acknowledge the tension we hold and release some of that. Breathe.

Coming up next: One area of this series will focus strictly on skin, skin care, skin woes, and more. We’ll be featuring Breanna from Healthy Skin AZ, a well known and sought after local aesthetician and skin care guru because she’s amazing and has helped me learn so much. I just adore her and her wealth of knowledge, and would like to share it with other women who might benefit as well.

Why focus several posts on skin? Well, it’s a huge part of who we are. Not only is it our largest organ, but it is our external greeter to the world. What I mean is that if we aren’t comfortable in our own skin then we are not going to be comfortable in our daily interactions with this world. It can greatly affect our self-esteem, our relationships, and us. And back to self-care, it is also just fun to learn new ways to care of our skin, put on make-up, or get a facial! Stay tuned for a very fun and encouraging series that you won’t want to miss.

Elisa
Elisa is a native Arizonan by birth and a Seattleite by heart. She is a wise, spirited woman who loves feeling the sun on her face, but also enjoys cold rainy days, complete with a cup of coffee and a good book or conversation. After graduating with a Masters in Counseling Psychology and seeing clients for a time, she took a hiatus to love on, play with, and offer copious amounts of hugs to our little girls, Malia and Jayden. She is now back working at Socorro Counseling and Consulting in Downtown Phoenix. Unafraid to laugh at herself and able to see the beauty in others, she makes everyone feel at ease, making her a genuine friend, therapist, and wife. Give her a cute pattern and a sewing machine or some spray paint and a piece of furniture and they are surely to be transformed into some warm piece of art that brightens our living space. She also finds creativity in cooking, making household cleaners, and anything Pinterest. In short, Elisa is stylish, wise, thoughtful, creative woman who makes everyone around her a better person, including her husband (who wrote this bio).
