The past few weeks I’ve had a front row seat {backstage} to Phoenix Fashion week. Our makeup team was recreating Spring 2016 makeup trends: pops of color on the eyes and soft glossy nudes on the lips. So much excitement swirled through the air as the models lined up for one last powder before strutting down the runway. Designers watched the crowd as they sent their collections down the runway to be admired for the first time. Now … as a mom who is getting up, making breakfast, packing lunches, tying shoes, and running out the door, you might think, “Ok. Well that’s cool, but how does this relate to me?” Well, I have been in the beauty industry for 10 years and have had firsthand experience with wanting to keep my look relevant while balancing mom life. Without a doubt, the most commonly asked question I get is, “How do I update my makeup when I only have 5 minutes to get ready?” Well, I took the looks from the runway and made them mom-friendly. Just because we are the busiest women on the planet and have a schedule packed from dawn to dusk does not mean we have to shy away from the fun new trends of the season.

The Looks
Metallic :: Perfect for a PTA Meeting or Mom Committee of Choice
Don’t shy away from the shimmer! When getting ready for a PTA meeting , or whichever mom committee you donate your time to, this is a great time to play with metallics on the eyes. The designers at PHX Fashion week paired it with casual street wear, like your favorite pair of jeans with a gray t-shirt. And pop a gold metallic shimmer eye shadow. For this look, try Amber Lights Cosmetics paired with Haute and Naughty Lash. Then apply three or four coats of mascara – don’t be afraid to get lashy!
Bold Deep Lip :: Perfect for a Girls Brunch
Whenever I have a new fab find, I always want to share it with my girlfriends immediately! So, I spare my husband the hyper enthused one-sided conversation about how amazing Viva Glam Ariana Grande is and how it’s the best Viva glam yet, and save it for brunch. My mama brunch go-to, of course, is any form of pancake, waffle, french toast hybrid; easy to cut into small bites avoiding the lipstick smear, and don’t forget to stick a straw in your mimosa or mom bevy of choice to ensure no lipstick on the teeth. Pop of Color :: Perfect for Date Night
Finally, you’re free! Time to change out of the yoga pants and slip into your favorite LBD. Dates are the perfect time to play with a new makeup trend. I’d steer clear of trying to rock new blue eye shadow at morning drop-off, but hey, if that’s your thing, let’s be friends! On the runway we used a tangerine orange all over the lid, but a more user-friendly color may be a bright purple, or royal blue. Sweep the color all over your lid bringing it just to the crease, and then blend out the crease with a color that is just a shade deeper than your skin; that will blur any harsh lines. Add three coats of mascara and –if you’re feeling adventurous– pop on a pair of lashes for a playful flirty look. This eye shadow is Plum Dressing.
Boho Bronze :: Perfect for All Mom Activities
Desert, sun-kissed, soft lashy eyes, golden bronzed cheeks, nude lips with soft shine. The number one question women ask me: “What can I do to update my makeup routine? I’ve been doing the same thing for years!” This Boho Bronze makeup trend is so soft. It’s all about hydrated radiant skin, a soft neutral pink lip, soft neutral eyes, and bronzer on your cheeks. This look can literally be done in less than 5 minutes. Here’s how:
- First step: moisturize!

- Fourth step: swirl a bit of bronzer on your cheek.
