North Phoenix Moms Blog - Summer Time = Reading Time Summer Programs

So my 4 year old is reading! Sure it’s just mini picture books like “The Cat on the Mat” and “Will is Ill” but he is reading and not just memorizing like he used to do. It was so exciting to see him sound out and read his first words. I’m hoping this is the start of a love of reading throughout the rest of his life. I love to read, although once I became a mom, I’ve found you really have to carve out time in your day to read for enjoyment. The same holds true for our little ones. We need to create the time in our busy days to read to them or have them read to us, and summer is the perfect time to start. There are so many summer reading programs available to encourage our kids to read. Here’s a few that I found:

Maricopa County Reads

Starting June 1st, the summer reading program kicks-off at Maricopa County libraries. The program called Every Hero Has A Story is for children 0-12 years old. Children earn a point for every minute of reading and 500 points will get them a free book! All you have to do is register and start reading.

Barnes and Noble

Your kids can also earn a free book at Barnes and Noble. Once they read 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal, you can take the journal to your local B&N and pick out a free book from a list at the store.

Changing Hands Bookstore

If you’re in Scottsdale, stop by Changing Hands Bookstore and pick up a bookmark to join its “Give Me Summer! Give Me Books!” reading program. The bookmark will be specific to your child’s grade level and track the books they’ve read over the summer. You can turn in the bookmark by August 31st for some prizes.

Chuck E. Cheese

You can earn free tokens through Chuck E. Cheese’s reading program. If your little one reads everyday 2 weeks in a row, they get 10 free tokens… and we all know Chuck E. Cheese is a fantastic outing in the middle of the day in the heat of summer!

I hope you can get some use out of this list. I know I will be participating in a few of these programs. Here’s to a summer full of reading fun!

Emily
The last few years have brought big changes for Emily. After spending years in high-stress, deadline-driven TV jobs in East Coast metros, family circumstances brought her and her husband Joel to the Arizona desert. Now this former news junkie is a stay-at-home mom to Miles, a fast-talking toddler with energy to spare. She spends her days teaching him about faith, letters, numbers and manners. Whenever he’s asleep she boots up the laptop to write for North Phoenix Moms Blog and other freelance gigs. Whatever spare time she has left is spent on a hike with her family or a rare date night with Joel, at the gym, coffee and dinner with friends, or in her craft room creating simple, beautiful jewelry for her online boutique, Hazel & May, and giving too many treats to her pups, Pepper and Gizmo.
