How to Survive Summer in Phoenix as a Mom

Summertime in Phoenix is not my favorite. Every year I tell myself that summer isn’t so bad, and then every year I complain all summer long. Now that I have little kids, I hate the desert heat even more. It’s too hot to drive anywhere past 10am, and we end up cooped up inside most days. This summer I’ve pledged to stop complaining, and focus on the good things summer can bring.  So, I’ve decided to make a mom’s guide on how to survive summer in Phoenix as a mom!

  1. Make Homemade Paletas (or Popsicles)

Nothing’s better than a cold treat on the hottest of summer days. Paletas fit the bill for me! I love that they are full of fruit, but are still creamy and satisfying. I love the idea of being able to control the ingredients and amount of sugar that goes in. I found a few promising recipes online and molds were super inexpensive on Amazon (what did we do before Amazon?!). My plan is the try using coconut sugar and almond or cashew milk since my family isn’t so good with dairy. Banana is first on the list! (Recipe blog coming soon?)

  1. Find Ideal Jean Shorts

Often times in the hot summer months, it is hard to put on clothes at all. Jean shorts are the perfect way for me to stay cool, look put together, and still be able to easily breastfeed. High waisted denim is God’s gift to mamas! I am on the hunt for the perfect pair that holds everything in without being embarrassed to wear them now that I’m in my 30s. I am currently trying a pair from Madewell that are definite contenders. 

  1. Put On Real Clothes (Most Days)

While on the subject of clothes, this summer I really want to make an effort to put on real clothes on the daily. It’s so easy for me to fall into a rut and live in my leggings—turns out they are pants after all. I find I feel more productive and simply more human when I at least make a little effort. I suppose actually getting dressed in the morning is a good place to start.

  1. Stick to My Workout Schedule

I just feel better when I am working out on a regular basis. I have made it my mission to find a workout routine I actually enjoy and will stick to. Favorites of both the blog and mine are Barre3 and Fit4mom. They make me want to workout and this summer I am sticking to it!

  1. The Perfect Lemonade

My two year old has become obsessed with picking lemons. This time of year we have more than I know what to do with. I have decided I am going to be that mom that makes the best lemonade. Again, I like the idea of being able to control the ingredients and how much sugar is involved. I also think getting my kiddo involved with this is going to be a great way to keep him busy and interested. 

  1. Start a Gratitude Journal

Starting my morning on a positive note is important to me. This summer I am going to start and end my day by writing down one thing I am grateful for. I think this will really keep things in perspective for me, and serve as a good reminder of all the good things we can forget when drenched in sweat. I also love the idea of getting a cute new little notebook to start this in; Target here I come.

  1. See the Ocean

I don’t take advantage of being within driving distance of the ocean. This summer I am taking that trip. One of the greatest things about parenting is being able to see the world for the first time through the eyes of your babes. This summer will be our first beach trip, and I can’t wait to see what my boys think of it. Particularly my two-year old who does NOT enjoy getting dirty.

  1. Hike With My Husband

Before we had kids, and even before we got married, I can’t really remember how my then boyfriend and I filled our days. This summer I want to make an effort to have some alone time with my husband that also doubles as a healthy activity. Let’s drop those kiddos off with the grandparents and take a hike babe, on the regular, early in the morning of course. 

  1. Update My Outdoor Space

We have all seen those Pinterest back yards with the twinkling lights that look amazing. I want that. I want our backyard to be a place that we really enjoy. With two little ones, we don’t have a lot of extra money to throw at this, but this summer I am going to update our outdoor space on a budget! (Another future blog post?)

  1. Patio Dinners

After my outdoor project is done, we are going to have dinner on the patio at least once a week. There are so many evenings that we eat at our kitchen island while our two-year-old zones out to his little iPad shows (no judgments please). I don’t want my boys to remember family dinner this way. We are going to unplug and get outside, once the heat of the day has died down at least a little. Maybe even followed by an evening swim!

As adults, once we are out of school, the novelty of summer time disappears a little bit. But every season gives us the chance to reset our frame of mind and start anew. Let’s conquer this summer mamas, with all the best (non-toxic) sunscreen in tow.

    Updating our outdoor space has truly made the biggest difference on my Outlook about summers in Phoenix. Well we can only really enjoy our backyard super early in the morning or after the kids are gone to sleep it is so nice to have a little Sanctuary outside to enjoy.
