Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live! is coming to Phoenix! Yes, I said that with almost as much excitement as my kids. The funny thing is I never thought I’d like one of their shows as much as I do but this one has captured me. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s no Gilmore Girls but it’ll do when witching hour begins and mama’s tank is depleted.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood tells engaging stories about the life of a preschooler using musical strategies grounded in Fred Rogers’ landmark social-emotional curriculum. Through imagination, creativity and music, Daniel and his friends learn the key social skills necessary for school and for life.
One of the things I love most about Daniel Tiger is that the show has substance. Based on the Neighborhood of Make Believe from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood it teaches kids to handle their emotions and deal with social situations from Daniel Tiger’s (a child’s) point of view. From the songs to the story line it helps children to learn how to help those around them, figure out and handle their emotions, and celebrate new experiences.
At first I was skeptical of any toddler show with singing, because BC (before children) all I heard from friends about shows their kids were watching was how weird the songs were, or how crazy the characters were, and how completely annoying the shows were. But from the moment we started watching, when we only had one kid and now have two, I could not be any more happy with it.
From “If you’ve gotta go potty, stop and go right away” to “when you feel so mad that you want to roar” these catchy and upbeat songs have helped me to communicate with my children and help us both learn new ways to handle situations. The show where Daniel’s birthday cake gets ruined helps to show that there are other great things that are still there, like the cake still tasting delicious! Even when my husband and I go out we still sing “grown ups come back” and my daughter will even sing it to her little brother to remind him it’s going to be okay.
