The Worst Advice Given to New Moms

Worst Advice for New Moms

Enjoy every second. It all goes by so fast!”

All of us have probably heard some variation of this quote from the moment we became mothers. And we were probably given this unsolicited advice at our worst possible moments: in the middle of nap strikes, sleepless nights, breastfeeding challenges, toddler tantrums, and ear infections. I’ve decided that this  “little tidbit of wisdom” is the worst thing to say to a mom because let’s face it, whether we are stay-at-home moms or full-time working moms, our mom guilt pops up the second doubt starts to creep into our mind. And when you’re going through a rough patch of parenting, you are constantly doubting your abilities to be a good mom.

Now, although I am a big believer in the power of positive thought and in maintaining a healthy perspective that our children are only home with us for a short amount of time, I also think it’s okay and normal not to enjoy every second of motherhood. Allowing yourself to feel a range of emotions while parenting can even help you enjoy it more once you get through that rough patch!

I personally just came out of a rough couple of months, which could have been written as a book titled The Terrible Twos are Real, and They’re Scary. But now that I’m on the other side, I can also fully enjoy (and appreciate) all of the amazing things about my daughter. I KNOW how hard we worked to get to this happy time and also know it will be short-lived, as another challenge is undoubtedly around the corner.

So, I will happily enjoy all the wonderful, tiny, good moments that I am given with my daughter, and remember them during the darker times. The unsolicited advice I wish would be given instead to new moms?

You’re doing AMAZING mama!”

This parenting gig is hard work, and I don’t remember any kind of manual handed out on the first day on the job. Take it one day at a time, confide in your girlfriends, practice self-love and relish in the wins!

  1. One of the most helpful things someone said during one of those rough patches was “it’s all a phase at this age”. During the rough patches it’s a mantra to get through, and during the good times it’s a good reminder to make the most of each moment.

  2. Each and every mom plays the novel role in our childhood in spite of so much difficulties. I heartily love this quote here: Enjoy every second. It all goes by so fast! Best of luck for all moms!
